A Year of Learning, Leadership, and Looking Ahead

As we reach the midpoint of 2026, it is remarkable to reflect on the breadth of education, collaboration, and professional development that has already taken place across the Massachusetts Assisted Living Association. This year has reinforced what makes our profession so special: a shared commitment to excellence, innovation, and improving the lives of older adults throughout the Commonwealth.

Looking Back: A Strong First Half of 2026

The first six months of the year have been filled with opportunities for members to learn, connect, and prepare for the changing landscape of assisted living. Educational programs have focused on some of the most pressing issues facing providers today, including leadership development, workforce challenges, dementia care, resident engagement, regulatory compliance, advocacy, and operational excellence.

June also brought our highly anticipated Regulations Symposium, where industry leaders, legal experts, and representatives from the Executive Office of Aging & Independence (AGE) provided critical updates on regulatory changes, compliance expectations, survey readiness, emergency preparedness, resident rights, and emerging policy developments impacting assisted living communities across Massachusetts.

Throughout the spring, webinars and training programs explored topics ranging from nursing leadership and memory care innovation to resident experience, communication, and emerging trends impacting senior living.

Our Executive Director and Resident Care Director training programs continue to prepare the next generation of leaders, while our Compliance Series, Medication Management, and Dementia Training opportunities through the National Council of Certified Dementia Practitioners (NCCDP) have strengthened knowledge across the industry.

The engagement and participation of our members continue to demonstrate the value of coming together to share knowledge, solve challenges, and elevate the quality of assisted living throughout Massachusetts.

Looking Ahead: Education for the Second Half of 2026

The momentum continues throughout the remainder of the year, with a robust lineup of educational programs, networking opportunities, leadership development initiatives, and signature events designed to support assisted living professionals at every level.

In July, members can participate in our Virtual Boot Camp training program, designed to provide practical education and professional development for both new and experienced assisted living professionals. Later that month, we will gather to celebrate the outstanding individuals and communities that make our profession exceptional at the Annual Excellence Awards Dinner, one of the most inspiring evenings of the year.

August continues with Resident Care Director Training, providing comprehensive education for current and aspiring clinical leaders, along with another Members-Only Connections Meeting where professionals can exchange ideas, discuss challenges, and learn from one another’s experiences. And a NEW webinar on Navigating the New Consumer Protection Regulations: Considerations for ALRs that you won’t want to miss to keep up with all the changes in the newly released AG Regulations for ALRs.

As we move into September, members will have access to nationally recognized dementia education programs, including Certified Dementia Practitioner and Certified Alzheimer’s and Dementia Care Trainer courses. We will also host another networking event before concluding the month with our premier educational event of the year—the Mass-ALA Annual Conference & Tradeshow.

The educational calendar remains strong following the conference. October will include a Business Partner Members-Only Virtual Meeting, Assisted Living Medication Management Training, and another session of the Executive Director Training Program, ensuring both operational leaders and frontline professionals continue to receive timely education and support.

As we move into the final months of the year, members can look forward to our Compliance Series, a final Members-Only Connections Meeting, the Annual In-Service Trainings Mandated by AGE (offered virtually), NCCDP’s Montessori Concept in Dementia Care – Certified Montessori Dementia Care Professional (CMDCP) program, and a Train-the-Trainer opportunity. These educational offerings are designed to help assisted living communities navigate evolving regulations, address workforce challenges, enhance resident care, and strengthen operational excellence. Each program provides valuable opportunities to learn from industry experts, exchange best practices with peers, and position your community for success in 2027.

Throughout the second half of the year, Mass-ALA remains committed to delivering education that is practical, timely, and directly applicable to the challenges facing assisted living providers today. Whether your focus is operations, resident care, sales and marketing, life enrichment, compliance, or executive leadership, there will be opportunities to learn, connect, and grow alongside your peers.

Mass-ALA’s Annual Conference & Tradeshow: Covering All The Bases

This year’s conference promises to be one of our most exciting events yet, bringing together professionals from across assisted living for a full day of learning, networking, and inspiration. We are thrilled to be at a new venue this year, Polar Park in Worcester, home of the WooSox on September 30th!

Keynote Speaker: Lou Merloni

We are thrilled to welcome Lou Merloni as this year’s keynote speaker.

Many New Englanders know Lou from his successful Major League Baseball career with the Boston Red Sox and his prominent role in sports broadcasting. Beyond the baseball diamond, Lou’s story is one of perseverance, resilience, teamwork, leadership, and adapting to change—qualities that resonate deeply with professionals working in assisted living.

Through personal stories and professional experiences, Lou will share lessons on overcoming obstacles, building strong teams, navigating setbacks, and maintaining a positive mindset during periods of change. Attendees can expect an engaging and energizing presentation that connects leadership principles from professional sports to the everyday challenges faced by assisted living professionals.

Educational Tracks Designed for Every Professional

This year’s conference features multiple educational tracks designed to provide targeted learning opportunities for professionals across all areas of assisted living.

Executive Track

The Executive Track focuses on leadership, operations, compliance, and organizational culture.

Sessions will explore critical topics such as maintaining fire and life safety systems, building stronger mission-driven cultures, and preparing for upcoming regulatory changes. Executive leaders will gain practical guidance on compliance readiness, employee engagement, risk management, and strategic planning as they navigate an increasingly complex operating environment.

Resident Care Track

Resident care professionals will find sessions dedicated to improving clinical coordination, leadership collaboration, and regulatory readiness.

Topics include strengthening partnerships between resident care and memory care leadership teams, exploring innovative primary care models that improve resident outcomes while reducing hospitalizations, and understanding the implementation of Basic Health Services under Massachusetts regulations. These sessions are designed to provide practical solutions that support both resident well-being and operational success.

Memory Care & Life Enrichment Track

This track highlights innovative approaches to engagement, dementia care, and resident quality of life.

Attendees will learn techniques that support emotional regulation and meaningful engagement for individuals living with dementia, explore strategies for facilitating lifelong learning and intellectual engagement, and discover creative programming ideas that promote wellness, social connection, and resident participation. These sessions emphasize person-centered care and practical tools that can be implemented immediately.

Sales & Marketing Track

As consumer expectations continue to evolve, the Sales & Marketing Track offers fresh perspectives on building trust and supporting families through the decision-making process.

Sessions will examine the changing senior living buyer journey, strategies for improving the move-in experience, and approaches that focus on relationship-building rather than traditional sales tactics. Participants will leave with ideas to strengthen occupancy efforts while creating more meaningful connections with prospective residents and families.

Independent Track

Designed for independent owners, operators, and leaders, this track addresses emerging trends and challenges affecting assisted living communities.

Topics include the growing role of artificial intelligence and care technology, improving collaboration with Adult Protective Services to strengthen resident protections, and navigating the financial and emotional factors that influence senior living decisions. These sessions provide forward-thinking perspectives on the future of assisted living operations and resident support.

Investing in Excellence

Education remains one of the most valuable investments we can make as professionals and as an industry. Every webinar attended, every training completed, and every conversation shared with a colleague helps strengthen our communities and improve the lives of the residents we serve.

As we move into the second half of 2026, we look forward to continuing this journey together. Thank you for your ongoing commitment to excellence, your participation in Mass-ALA programs, and your dedication to advancing assisted living throughout Massachusetts.

We hope to see you at our upcoming educational programs and at the Annual Conference & Tradeshow this fall for what promises to be an exceptional day of learning, networking, and inspiration.
